Two state laws affecting rental application screening became effective on January 1, 2025.

California​

California CA AB 2493 became effective on January 1st, 2025.

  • In no case shall the amount of the application screening fee charged by the landlord or their agent be greater than thirty dollars ($30) per applicant.

Illinois​

Illinois HB 4926 became effective January 1st, 2025.

  • Allows applicants to submit a portable screening report up to 30 days from issuance for rental housing applications. When such a report is provided, a housing provider is not allowed to charge an application fee.
